The United States Department of Health and Human Services’ Healthy People 2030 initiative identified improving health literacy as a high-priority goal, recognizing both personal and organizational health literacy as critical for providing equitable care. Personal health literacy refers to an individual’s ability to find, understand, and use information about health and health services to make well-informed health decisions for themselves and/or others. Low personal health literacy is associated with a variety of poor health behaviors in general medical populations and among older adults. In this Mitch Rosenthal Memorial Research webinar, Angelle Sander, Ph.D. and Monique Pappadis, Ph.D. will focus on characterizing health literacy in a multicenter sample of individuals with traumatic brain injury and demonstrating its relationship to sociodemographics, injury characteristics, and health outcomes.

Monique R. Pappadis, M.Ed., Ph.D., is a tenured Associate Professor and Vice Chair of the Department of Population Health and Health Disparities at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) at Galveston. Dr. Pappadis is also an Investigator and the Director of Dissemination and Cultural Humility at TIRR Memorial Hermann’s Brain Injury Research Center. Her research aims to improve rehabilitation outcomes and decrease ethnic minority health disparities, as well as improve care transitions and continuity of care, particularly among persons with traumatic brain injury (TBI) or stroke. Her recent work aims to improve screening for elder mistreatment and explore the intersection between elder mistreatment and TBI. She has a continued interest in minority aging, gender/sex disparities in rehabilitation, health literacy of patients and caregivers, and psychosocial adjustment to disability. She is a member of the Academy of Certified Brain Injury Specialists (ACBIS) Board of Governors for the Brain Injury Association of America. The American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine (ACRM) and the National Institute on Aging recently recognized Dr. Pappadis for her nationally significant contributions to the field of medical rehabilitation and as well as enhancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) through mentorship of underrepresented student trainees.
Angelle M. Sander, Ph.D., is a Professor in the H. Ben Taub Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Baylor College of Medicine, Director of TIRR Memorial Hermann’s Brain Injury Research Center, and Senior Scientist on the TIRR Research Council. She is the Project Director for the TIRR Memorial Hermann/Baylor College of Medicine/UTHealth Collaborative Traumatic Brain Injury Model System. She has been PI or Co-Investigator on federally funded studies addressing the prediction and treatment of cognitive, emotional, and psychosocial problems in persons with TBI, self-management of TBI-related consequences, health literacy in individuals with TBI, intimacy and sexuality after TBI, the impact of TBI on caregivers, and social determinants of health following TBI. She has over 140 peer-reviewed publications, numerous book chapters and published abstracts, and multiple consumer-oriented dissemination products, including fact sheets, educational manuals, webcasts, and videos targeted toward individuals with TBI, their care partners, and rehabilitation professionals.

Registration cancellations must be emailed to email@example.com. Refund Eligibility: Webinar registration fees are refundable if submitted no later than 24 hours before the scheduled webinar date/start time. Refunds are subject to a $10 cancellation fee. Cancellations received less than 24 hours before the scheduled webinar date/start time will not be refunded. If you are unable to attend the live webinar, you can request access to the recorded webinar. If we cancel a webinar due to circumstances beyond our control, we will notify attendees with as much advance notice as possible. Attendees will be given the opportunity to transfer their registration to another webinar or obtain a full refund.
Refunds are Not Provided for the Following Reasons: 1. Attendee Technology. It is the responsibility of the webinar attendee to test the computer setup prior to the start of the webinar. If failure with your technology prevents access to the live webinar, you will not be eligible for a refund. If the technical problem is due to our error, we will offer you the choice of access to a copy of the recording or a full refund. 2. Attendee Email. Refunds will not be issued in cases where an attendee did not receive the webinar login instruction email. It is the attendee’s responsibility to contact us if they don’t receive the required login information at least 24 hours prior to the start time of the webinar. 3. Attendee Absence. Attendees who do not participate in the live webinar will not be entitled to a refund.
