  Continuing Education Credits

  • AAFP CME Credit: The AAFP has reviewed the Brain Injury Fundamentals Course (Instructor Led) and deemed it acceptable for AAFP credit. Term of approval is from 09/02/2024 to 09/02/2025. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.  This session, Brain Injury Fundamentals Instructor Led Course, is approved for 8 AAFP Elective credits. (As indicated on the course completion certificate). February 7, 2025

• 8:00-9:00 a.m. ET – Chapter 1. Brain Injury Overview
• Understand how brain injury may impact the person and their family and community. Illustrate and describe the main areas of the brain and their functions. Understand how the concept of neuroplasticity relates to recovery from brain injury.
  
  
• 9:00-10:00 a.m. ET – Chapter 2. Cognition
• Define cognition and list four characteristics of impaired cognition. Describe how impaired cognition affects daily functions.

February 14, 2025

• 8:00-9:00 a.m. ET  – Chapter 3. Guidelines for Interacting and Building Rapport
• Identify three brain injury issues impacting communication. Describe the importance of purposeful, goal-oriented communication for building rapport and interacting effectively. Describe how to respond to crises and apply effective interaction techniques to sample situations.
  
  
• 9:00-10:00 a.m. ET  – Chapter 4. Brain Injury and Behavior
• Identify and define common behavioral complications of brain injury. Discuss common behavioral principles, approaches, and strategies. Understand de-escalation techniques used when working with individuals with brain injury.

February 21, 2025

• 8:00-9:00 a.m. ET  – Chapter 5. Complications After Brain Injury
• List three different disorders of consciousness and describe how they are measured. Describe five medical complications commonly associated with brain injury. Understand the causes of fatigue related to brain injury. Describe strategies to improve sleep.
  
  
• 9:00-10:00 a.m. ET – Chapter 6. Medication Management
• Describe impairments that medication may address following brain injury. Describe "five rights" of safe medication management. Identify the difference between a therapeutic effect and an adverse side effect. Define "universal precautions" and personal protective equipment. Define approaches to use when teaching medication management to persons served.

February 28, 2025

• 8:00-9:00 a.m. ET  – Chapter 7. Families Coping with Brain Injury
• Describe caregiver stress and discuss the signs. Describe strategies for communicating and interacting with families. Identify possible needs families may have as they assume caregiver roles.
  
  
• 9:00-10:00 a.m. ET  – Comprehensive Review of Course Materials and/or Questions, Quiz Completion and Certificate Issuance *This session does not count toward contact hours.
