This presentation provides an overview of thought processes in the management of neurobehavioral challenges post-ABI. It includes a reconceptualization of the traditional “behavior team/behavior plan” as a “dignity team/dignity plan” and includes common challenges, thought processes, and specific interventions in both a theoretical and practical format. Case examples are provided.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify how fundamental attribution error in caregivers adversely affects the development of mutually reinforcing relationships within the survivor/caregiver roles.
  2.  Describe the neurobehavioral characteristics that necessitate the use of a dignity-based intervention plan and a more traditional behavior plan.
  3. Discuss nine survivor-specific, dignity-based interventions built upon a combination of behavioral treatment planning and sensory/perceptual/communicative/cognitive interventions after brain injury.
