Psychological Safety is perceived (and experienced) when a person belongs and feels secure in learning, contributing, and even challenging the status quo.  When Psychological Safety is high, people take more ownership, release more discretionary effort, collaborate and engage in positive problem-solving, and innovate.  When Psychological Safety is low, people experience fear - they shut down, self-censor, and redirect their energy toward risk management, pain avoidance, and self-preservation.  So, how do organizations create Psychological Safety?

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the four stages of Psychological Safety and how to promote them in your organization
  • Explain how Psychological Safety is associated with innovation.
