Though the head and airways are the most common target of physical attack in domestic violence (DV), trauma-informed care approaches have not historically acknowledged or addressed brain injury as central to many survivors' experiences and cause of current struggles, including engaging life-promoting safety and health services. Community-partnered research in Ohio led to the discovery that probable brain injury, from concurrent and repeated head trauma and strangulation, was common among service seeking DV survivors, yet was unrecognized by providers. In response, the Ohio Domestic Violence Network built and evaluated the CARE (Connect, Acknowledge, Respond, Evaluate) approach to advocacy.
Learning Objectives
- Describe how CARE is being used by domestic violence service organizations to increase trauma-informed care practices.
- List the agency-wide components of CARE implementation (e.g., framework, tools, training).
- Discuss how CARE can be used flexibly when working with survivors of violence in various service settings.
