In this clinical webinar, Tom Thompson, M.S., CCC/SLP will focus on the practical application of patient-centered evidence-based tools in the assessment and treatment of cognitive communication disorders. He will discuss client-centered evaluation procedures, as well as the standardized assessments used to assess memory, attention, executive functioning, and metacognitive skills. Additionally, he will provide an in-depth look at evidence-based rehabilitation tools and compensatory strategies designed to address these cognitive-communication challenges. Learn how to implement these tools effectively in clinical practice to support individuals in improving their cognitive-communication abilities and overall functional outcomes.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify and apply comprehensive, client-centered evaluation procedures to assess cognitive-communication disorders, with a focus on memory, attention, executive functioning, functional communication, and metacognitive skills.
- Implement effective evidence-based treatment tools and compensatory strategies to improve cognitive communication skills and promote functional independence in individuals with acquired brain injuries and disease.
- Develop strategies to promote the generalization of compensatory techniques in real-world settings, including at home and in the community, ensuring lasting functional improvements beyond the clinical environment.

Speaker Bio
Tom Thompson, M.S., CCC/SLP, is Clinical Professor, Speech-Language-Hearing Science Department, Loyola University Maryland. Tom has worked in the field of neurorehabilitation in a variety of settings since 1999 including hospitals, rehabilitation centers, private practice and university clinics. He specializes in the assessment and treatment of language, motor speech and cognitive-communication disorders. He currently teaches a Cognitive Communication Disorders course and provides clinical supervision and mentorship to first year graduate students at Loyola. Additionally, he’s the coordinator of the interprofessional Acquired Brain Injury Program at the Loyola Clinical Centers (LCC) in North Baltimore, a program that he helped to design and launch in 2012. In 2023 he was awarded the Brain Injury Association of Maryland’s Alicia Cignatta Spirit of Independence Award for his service to the community in providing support to individuals with brain injuries through the ABI program at the LCC.

Registration cancellations must be emailed to customerservice@biausa.org. Refund Eligibility: Webinar registration fees are refundable if submitted no later than 24 hours before the scheduled webinar date/start time. Refunds are subject to a $10 cancellation fee. Cancellations received less than 24 hours before the scheduled webinar date/start time will not be refunded. If you are unable to attend the live webinar, you can request access to the recorded webinar. If we cancel a webinar due to circumstances beyond our control, we will notify attendees with as much advance notice as possible. Attendees will be given the opportunity to transfer their registration to another webinar or obtain a full refund.
Refunds are Not Provided for the Following Reasons: 1. Attendee Technology. It is the responsibility of the webinar attendee to test the computer setup prior to the start of the webinar. If failure with your technology prevents access to the live webinar, you will not be eligible for a refund. If the technical problem is due to our error, we will offer you the choice of access to a copy of the recording or a full refund. 2. Attendee Email. Refunds will not be issued in cases where an attendee did not receive the webinar login instruction email. It is the attendee’s responsibility to contact us if they don’t receive the required login information at least 24 hours prior to the start time of the webinar. 3. Attendee Absence. Attendees who do not participate in the live webinar will not be entitled to a refund.
